Jenna and Barbara Bush, aka those entertaining twin daughters of ex-President George W. Bush, penned a letter to Sasha and Malia Obama in the Wall Street Journal, offering them some solid advice on growing up in the spotlight of the White House. As you all know, Jenna and Barbara were “First Grandkids” of the first President Bush, as well as First Daughters of Texas.

While the Bush Twins (especially that Jenna) caught the brunt of “party girl criticism” no one should be shocked that they kept trying to ditch their Secret Service detail and sneak a beer as teens. (I was a reporter in Texas when someone narced on Jenna for trying to buy alcohol at a Chuy’s. I mean, yeah, she was underage, but you’d think the child was trying to smoke crack the way people acted.)

Someone has been tracking their every move for more than half of their young life. Sometimes a Bush girl just wants to get her drink on. But, sigh. They apparently kept it too real. After all, most of us don’t have the fortitude of Chelsea Clinton, who, mentally, is the Sherman Tank of presidential kids.

I mean, you’d have to be with those parents. I always have these visualizations of Chelsea methodically fixing her own “boo boos” at five.

But the Bush Twins offered some heart-felt advice, welcoming them into the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Secret Service Security Risks.”

(A)lthough it’s an honor and full of so many extraordinary opportunities, it isn’t always easy being a member of the club you are about to join. Our dad, like yours, is a man of great integrity and love; a man who always put us first. We still see him now as we did when we were seven: as our loving daddy. Our Dad, who read to us nightly, taught us how to score tedious baseball games. He is our father, not the sketch in a paper or part of a skit on TV. Many people will think they know him, but they have no idea how he felt the day you were born, the pride he felt on your first day of school, or how much you both love being his daughters. So here is our most important piece of advice: remember who your dad really is.
