“Counter-Birther” Resolution Passes House

Seems HuffPo chased around those recalcitrant “maybe he isn’t, I need to see the paperwork” Congress-folk for naught because they all voted unanimously on a resolution honoring Hawaii’s induction into the union that also states that President Barack Obama is, ahem, a native of it. The resolution is being pushed by Rep. Neil Abercrombie.

As for including the line about Obama, Abercrombie spokesman Dave Helfert told the Huffington Post: “OK. So it happens to mention that the 44th President of the United States was born there on August 4, 1961. Should we ignore that…. I mean what are you going to do, not mention the fact that the 44th president was born in your state?”

Here’s what part of the resolution says:

Recognizing and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the entry of Hawaii into the Union as the 50th State.

Whereas August 21, 2009, marks the 50th Anniversary of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s signing of Proclamation 3309, which admitted Hawaii into the Union in compliance with the Hawaii Admission Act, enacted by the United States Congress on March 18, 1959;

Whereas Hawaii is `a place like no other, with a people like no other’ and bridges the mainland United States to the Asia-Pacific region;

Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii;

Naturally we all know that this will SILENCE NOTHING, but nice try, Abercrombie. Congrats on your state’s 50th birthday!

    Hallelujah, this issue has been finally put to bed. Hip, hip, hurray! Birthers, are you satisfied now? Birthers? (silence, crickets) I don’t hear any celebrations.

    This was a very smart move, but, the BIRTHER’S will not be satisfied, What the BIRTHER’S are really saying is, ( The President had a father from KENYA and therefore he is not considered an AMERICAN! this is not about the BIRTH CERTIFICATE, they do not consider the PRESIDENT as being EQUAL to any past WHITE PRESIDENT! remember that picture they e-mailed out about all the different President”s and if we had a Hispanic or Asian President they would be going through the same thing! you are not a true BLOODED AMERICAN unless you are WHITE! now this is in the TWISTED mind’s of some white folk’s!!!

    You don’t need a birth certificate to prove this. The last time I checked, you need a mother to be born. If Barack’s mother was in the US, (or was not using her passport on his birthday) he could not have been born abroad. I know the GOP is famously a fan of immaculate conception, but this is just behaving stupidly.Science people. Use your science.

    The "birthers" are a bunch of stupid, ignorant racist asshats (Snob, I love that term!) and no amount of reasoning is going to satisfy them. My mother & her six siblings were all born in Shanghai. I have seven cousins born in various Japanese cities. An uncle was born in Paris. Yet, at birth, they were all Americans. Why? Their parents were American citizens. Obama’s mama was an American citizen, from Kansas just like Dorothy, haha! So, at birth, Barack Obama was an American citizen, regardless of his place of birth. Period. Does this make any difference to stupid racists? Don’t hold your breath.

    I was going to write something akin to what "hoodoowah" wrote, but I’ll just reiterate: U.S. immigration law states that children born to an American citizen abroad are citizens by virtue of their parent’s citizenship — not the city of their birth. Obama’s mother was a United States citizen, therefore any children born to her are U.S. citizens regardless of their place of birth. Anyone with an understanding of U.S. immigration law should cite this every time a birther or a birther supporter — whether it be Lou Dobbs or a Congressperson or a newspaper columnist — brings up this lunacy. Which brings us to another question: Why hasn’t any news person asked an immigration lawyer about this basic fact of U.S. immigration law which would be the definitive end to it?
