The Snob on NPR!

    Ok, so I heard you on NPR not too long ago (very good discussion, btw) and I am certain you were one of the editors at the Midland Reporter-Telegram when I was a summer intern there about 7 years ago. I think I might even still have the caricature you drew of me (Andrea Fryrear). I just had to say how weirdly coincidental that was. Hope all is well with you!

    andrea: It is a small blogosphere after all! And yes, that was me. I remember your name, but not your face. That time in Midland seems so long ago. I’m amazed that you even remember me. I was only there for about a year.

    tamra: Thank you. I’m a little embarrassed as I listen back to the tape because of the severe “ya knows” that took over where my “dudes” normally would have been. That, and my nasally Midwestern squawk has murdered my black accent. I need to start hanging out with more Negroes ASAP.

    I’m listening to you right now snob!! you sound great. I agreed with basically everything you said.However, when you were saying that we need neighborhoods where middle income people and young “hip” people (who like to live and lofts and condos) can mix live together, I think we have that here in certain parts of the south side. On my block we have middle class folks but two blocks down we have condos going for $700,00.

    I love how varied accents are! At the risk of sounding ignorant, American accents sound very different to here 🙂

    Snob,I don’t know if I mentioned it, but I’m from St. Louis too, and I had the “Midwestern squawk” going on for a while myself. Imagine my disappointment when, after being in Nashville for grad school for just a FEW years, an old Midwestern friend had the nerve to tell me I had developed a slight “Southern drawl.” Hmpf!Anyway, puh-lease. Don’t worry about the “ya knows.” Both Michelle and Barack Obama seem to say “um” or “uh” quite a bit when they talk–and I think I’ve even heard Clinton doing the “ya know” think tho’ I don’t remember under which circumstances and what context…So, don’t worry about it. If it really bugs you, have someone practice doing interview questions with you–I’m sure this won’t be the last time we hear you over the airways! 😉
