It’s Official: I Can’t Escape Beyonce

First the Inaugural Ball, then every Grammys for the last few years, and now she’s all over the Oscars … AGAIN: the ubiquitous Beyonce.

And while I enjoy the occasional Beyonce jam, I’m going to be honest, if this had been any other singer giving this lackluster of a performance at the effing Oscars it would have been devastating, but it was Beyonce, so she could just skate by on the ordinary.

I normally don’t watch the Oscars, but I had it on in the background while I worked on a screenplay and looked up when I noticed host Hugh Jackman start doing a musical number. I like musicals, so I stopped what I was doing to watch, but when Beyonce appeared I realized that I will never be able to get away from this woman. Will it NEVER END? You’d think folks were suffering for talent or something, but there are other women who can dance and sing who aren’t Beyonce who probably would have done a better job.

One: She can’t really dance. She’s good with regimented, terse movements (a la Janet Jackson), but has no natural flow or body lift that an actual dancer would possess. Her feet are always heavy. Her moves always look regimented and stiff. She’s good at wilding out, but musical numbers rarely involve flailing around and tossing ye olde lacefront for good measure. Compared to Hugh and all the actual dancers on that stage she was really out of her element.

Two: Um … no.

They could have at least put her in some Ginger Rogers-esque ball gown, not something Catherine Zeta Jones left crumpled up in a corner after “Chicago” wrapped several years ago. She’s a beautiful, curvy woman, but that outfit made her look enormous next to all the other tinier, more athletic dancers. No one wants to look enormous. Not even the pretty ones. Especially when Bey is not actually fat. She just has thick legs. A ball gown really would have helped and she would have matched Hugh’s top hat and tails, Fred Astaire homage. But she was going for something tough, sexy and Fosse when she is neither tough or “Fosse.” It was a massive fail for me. That whole outfit.

Three: Baz Lurhman, I really expected better from the guy who gave me Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom. That was the most bizarrely edited and thrown together musical number ever, which didn’t help Beyonce out at all. Did you want her to look like a slow moving marsupial on purpose?

And let’s be honest, Bey has no history with musical theater other than she had a wooden, dull part in “Dreamgirls.” And I can name, off the top of my head, at least ten actresses/singers, white and black, who probably could have soft-shoed their way through that to match Jackman’s verve.

1. Vanessa Williams (obvious choice)
2. Catherine Zeta Jones (even more obvious choice)
3. Anika Noni Rose
4. Sharon Leal
5. Mya (The child trained with Savion Glover)
6. Jasmine Guy (I know she’s not really famous anymore, but she did restart her career on the stage, in “Chicago” of all things and has a very “Fosse-esque” style)
7. Anne Hathaway (even though she popped up in the opening segment she has a nice “Julie Andrews” thing going on)
8. Christina Aguliera (if they could have gotten her to dial it back five or ten notches)
9. Bernadette Peters
10. Vanessa Hudgens (Hell, she went through the histrionics/gymnastics that was “High School Musical” one, two and three)
11. Heather Headley (She was “Aida!”)

Even Rosario Dawson, who can barely sing would have been better. But Beyonce is the “It” everything of the moment. So rather than watching someone who’s actually been in a theater musical on stage, or seeing someone who is a more natural dancer go through the motions, I got Beyonce. And I’m sick of Beyonce. It’s like showing up at a restaurant and always getting steak. Yeah, steak is nice. But maybe I wanted the Chilean bass this week. Or the Mahi Mahi. Or some damn chicken. Or a bacon cheeseburger.

I can’t live on a diet of Bey alone!

I know that Beyonce wants to take advantage of every little opportunity that comes her way and she did star in “Cadalliac Records” (a sort of musical) this year, but so did Sharon Leal (the lesser celebrated “Soul Men”) and why NOT Sharon Leal? Doesn’t she suffer enough having to pretend to be attracted to Taye Diggs on “Private Practice?”

All I’m saying is … give another sister a chance. Any sister. I’m not picky. Keke Palmer (even though she’s like 12 or something). The OTHER former members of Destiny’s Child. Any of them. Janet Jackson. It doesn’t even have to be a black woman either. Drag Nicole Kidman’s non-singing ass back up there. She bombed in “Australia” too. Just someone who can actually pull off a musical. When Hugh announced “The Musical Is Back!” at the end I thought, “and that production just murdered it! Bring back Debbie Allen and the Oscar dancers!” If that were my only experience with Hollywood musicals I would hate musicals and I have HATED Beyonce in musicals since “Carmen: A Hip Hopera.”

It should have been you, Lauryn Hill! It should have been you!

In my house we refered to her as Bey-nono (a la a jealous Whitley Gilbert’s competition, Ki-nono) and as soon as her no-pants wearing Sasha Fiercing self schlumped down the steps I knew that the number was lost.I wish that Beyonce would just take a very long break. Chillax a little, put on some sweatpants and watch bad Sci-Fi movies while Jay feeds her chocolate covered popcorn or something.ANYTHING so long as she’s not on my TV every single day.

  2. I agree…the performance was completely lack luster and I hated the outfit…too garish…especially with many of the presenters and award winners wearing pale tones/white dresses. And here she comes in red…ugly.

    Uh, Beyonce IS ordinary.

  5. Sad fact of the matter is she is too competitive and her father is too money hungry. I have been sick of her a long time ago. Danielle, I really hope that this is the only article/commentary I have to read regarding Beyowulf. She is nauseating and is nothing more than an annoying morning mosquito buzz when you are trying to get those last five minutes of shut eye. Her stans like to say that people are hating on her because she is beautiful. light skinned, etc. etc. etc. and the rest of us are overweight, dark skinned, and ugly. Ugh! Whatever…The fact of the matter is that Beyowulf and her handlers have caused her to become over exposed. It is one thing to be over exposed and actually have drama and personality (ala Brit Brit). But to be over exposed, robotic, and boring is another. Then to try to use her farce of a marriage to stir controversy for a swagger jacked mediocre cd was just laughable. I mean, we have the Obamas. We don’t need Beyowulf and Camel.OK…let me stop. So now let me tell you all how I really feel…LOL!

CO-SIGN. i was bored the moment she appeared. the first thing out my mouth was how i wished she would take at least a 2 year break. i know she wants to be an icon, but dammit they rest too!

  7. URCK URCK URCK!! CANNOT STAND BEYONCE!!! I simply turn the channel when she appears (and how irked was I that she was the one serenading the first couple on inauguration night?!?! ew, im just sick of seeing her fake ass)Anyways, how dreadful was her dress last night?! (she at least sometimes, gets the dressing right, her mother must have designed that gold and black puke of a dress she was wearing)and even more, HOW AWFUL WAS THE OSCARS LAST NIGHT?!?!Who the hell picked out the host and his TERRIBLE JOKES!! The only 2 bright spot was every single slumdog moment (i heart the story behind the movie), and the juoaqin pheonix parody by ben stiller, apart from that, I should have been watching the first couple TOTALLY WOW us at the governor’s ball (How smoking did FLOTUS look?!?!)

How can I put it politely? Beyonce simply lacks class. Everything about her is just so pedestrian. How she came to be lauded as some great beauty, I can’t imagine. she’s just a short pudgy girl next door with a so so voice. No amount of blond weave or sequins will ever change that.

@ AllOK. Unless some Stans show up, I’m going to say it’s official. Everyone at The Black Snob thought that performance (if not the whole Oscars) was a hot mess. But, seriously, that number made me hate musicals. Would it KILL them to actual do a true tribute to the former greatness of musicals? Like I still remember the brilliance that was Gregory Hines. And despite the movie being a bit of a mess, "The Cotton Club" showed that you could do something innovative, and despite it being misunderstood when it was released, "Pennies From Heaven" was a true homage to the genre. Why they can’t do a musical right in the same way Hollywood can’t do a Kung Fu movie right is a sin to art.But it would make sense that they would suck at staging both. The best dance/fight sequences are filmed in similar manners and Americans presently have this obsession with chopping everything up and making it unrecognizable. There’s no fluidity. Can we get the folks in Hong Kong who make the action movies to start directing Hollywood musicals? I bet the stunt coordinator from the Matrix has it in him if he would just give it a go.Oh, and I think Beyonce should take a break too, but she has a new movie coming out with Idris Elba. How much do you love Elba to suffer through "Obsession," ladies? Maybe that’ll be the next post!

  12. Dukedraven Avatar

With those high heels she was wearing, it was no wonder she looked stiff while dancing. She was worried about falling. She did appear gigantic to me.

  13. I’m not a Beyonce fan. She’s all calories and no nutrition in my books, however I think she handled that horrendous "medley" and as best as anyone could have. Baz Lurhman should be sued.

@ NonaAgreed. Baz Lurhman was a massive fail all around on that piece of shit.

  15. No Beyonce stan here:But let’s be considerate; this is her only chance to be on stage at the Oscars.I too love musicals, and I actually saw the stage production of "Oklahoma!" with Hugh Jackman on PBS. He was good. This performance was epic fail. The whole Academy Awards this year was bizarre. From Penelope Cruz winning Best Supporting Actress, to the weird doll hair on Sophia Lauren and Alicia Keys.

  16. Snob,I was LMAO throughout the entire piece. You are hilarious. I’m feeling you. Seriously feeling you on this. They needed someone who knows musical theater. It was hideous. But, she’ll never leave the stage. Folks need to just stop asking her to do things that she had not the talent to do. Period. they pushed their luck. Hugh Jackman’s cheesy opening should have been enough..folks should have known better.

  17. Oh, and I think Beyonce should take a break too, but she has a new movie coming out with Idris Elba. How much do you love Elba to suffer through "Obsession," ladies? Maybe that’ll be the next post!I LUV Jeffery Wright and wouldn’t even suffer through a bootleg of Cadillac Records because of her.I saw the trailer over at IMDB.com, and shook my head. Has the woman from Heroes too..and even THAT, in combination with Elba is enough to make me watch another movie with her.

Thank You!! I was beginning to think I was the only one who is sick, and who has been sick of Beyonce for a while!! Everyone’s been commenting on her terrible dance skills last night, but what about the fact that the "B" was lip-synching??!! I thought the "best performer in the world" could dance and sing live simultaneously???Maybe her over exposure is a blessing in disguise. My calculations suggests the more she is put out there means the more people will become sick of seeing her which equals the closer she becomes to being a has been starring in her own show on VH1!!!! …wait a minute…Oh Hell, she’ll be on our tv screens forever…*sreams* NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  19. sorry, I misspoke. Landry from Heroes and Elba are still NOT ENOUGH to get me to watch this movie and overcome my Beyonce heebie jeebies.

  20. Beyonce = all ass, no class. This has provided another reason for me not to watch the Oscars – any year.

  21. Danielle Belton Avatar

@ jemmitBeyonce performed at the Oscars as recently as 2005. The chick was not a newcomer, so … I feel free to complain about the lacklusterness of it all. This wasn’t her only chance. Plus she attended the damn Oscars the year Dreamgirls was up for it’s nomination in 2007 and performed "Listen" which was nominated for Best Song. I mean, we probably have YEARS to look forward to of Beyonce at the damn Oscars until she finally pulls the full Halle Berry and wills her way to little gold man.

  22. I am loving the Beyonce hateration on this thread. As I watched last night, I was thinking the same thing. I think she’s beautiful and even looked pretty stunning at times in Dreamgirls, but her voice is just so-so and she really needs to time a time-out. Also, the Idris movie is very tricky…cuz I love me some Idris, but -2 + 1 = -1, so I might just have to catch that on DVD when I can forward thru any non-Idris parts.

  23. oops…I meant "take" a time out….also, I thought Hugh Jackman was great FWIW.

@ RikryahOh, and the film is a Matthew and Beyonce Knowles production!

Beyonce Knowles, Idris Elba (American Gangster), and Ali Larter (Heroes, Resident Evil) will be playing in an upcoming thriller called Obsessed.Elba will play an asset manager with a hot wife (Knowles) who has a sexy office worker (Larter) stalking him. Beyonce and Mathew Knowles will executive produce the film. “Obsessed” and Beyonce in the same sentence is redundant. From Urban Celebs

Why, Idris, why? I know. I know. You’re gorgeous. Roles are hard to come by when it’s you, Don Cheadle, Derek Luke and Terrence Howard in a death match for every damn role. And Cheadle and Howard have the one-leg-up.And have you SEEN the poster? (Or the adverts on her damn jeans! She’s selling the movie on her clothing line, ya’ll! HILARIOUS! Now that’s capitalism at work, my friends. Synergy!)

  25. I may be the only one on this particular post who disagrees but oh well. I don’t hate Beyonce, I think she is immensely talented. She has a beautiful voice and she puts everything into each and every one of her performances. I will say that her voice is very distinctive—so distinctive, in fact, that it can get old pretty quickly. So while Beyonce is a bit overrated, there’s a reason she’s everywhere: clearly she has an appeal that ads, movie makers and song writers still want. When they don’t, she’ll sit down for a minute.

  26. Snob, I know she was there for Dreamgirls, but what I meant was that she will never get a gold statute.

  27. er statue..sorry, my mind is on the bar exam.

  28. OK the night started off wrong for me when I tuned into the telecast and saw Tina Fey and Steve Martin apparently lip synching or was it bad tape delay, in case someone said something objectionable. The editing appeared as if they were on green screen and the audience was somewhere in another room. Then the dance number started and when I saw Beyonce I immediately lost all interest. I knew that they had stopped letting Debbie Allen do dance numbers some time ago but they need to bring her back. This looked like they had put it together the day before and brought "B" in that morning just for what do they when they put the tape down on the floor so that you know where to stand for the best angle. Anyway, I digress. "B’s" father is only interested in her career and I’m so glad that Kelly finally will have some independent representation.I also shouted hugely when Cuba told Robert Downey Jr to stop taking parts from black actors. I fear I have gone on too long and strayed way off subject. I too join the Beyonce is overexposed untalented fan club. Is their a secret handshake of bumpersticker?

@ jemmittI stand corrected. But … considering some of the women (and men) who have won Oscars in the past, I wouldn’t count Madame Lacefront out yet. If that woman can do one thing it is hustle her ass off at something until she gets something/anything out of it. She is not going to give up on acting any time soon and given the right vehicle (and maybe some personal "revelations" in her strengths and limits as an actress), it could happen.Hell, folks are already talking "Oscar" for comedian Mo’Nique for her efforts in "Push." And who ever thought Mo’Nique and Oscar would be in the same sentence? The shizz could happen!

  32. Beyonce is a marvelous entertainer, she is the Entertairner of our generation, I refuse to bash her, there are plenty of white women in Hollywood who are not worthy, but people just hold them in high esteem, Beyonce deserves what she has, and as a black woman she has probably had to fight harder than most white pop artist.

  33. I agree Nisha, why hate on the one black woman that hollywood hold in such high esteem, WHY???

  34. I truly understand taking the opportunity to expose yourself. However, I am personally tired of turning the channels and seeing her. She is overexposed! Give me a break. Bey, take a sabbatical and enjoy the married life.

  35. Snob, I agree she does need to take a break. I saw her so called performance at the Oscars and thought it sucked badly. I’m actually a semi-fan of Beyonce but I have grown tired of everyone trying to put this girl in damn near any role, musical, commercial etc.. She is starting to become unrefreshed face more and more as her pimp/father manager pushes Beyonce down America throats. The only way to stop Beyonce is for another up and coming artist to force her to sit down. So, there has not been another Black women to take on Beyonce. Until that happens were doomed to see her everywhere! 😦

  36. "Beyonce is a marvelous entertainer, she is the Entertairner of our generation, I refuse to bash her, there are plenty of white women in Hollywood who are not worthy, but people just hold them in high esteem, Beyonce deserves what she has, and as a black woman she has probably had to fight harder than most white pop artist." Your correct NAGROM… In your statement above. But here is the problem "Why is she the only Black woman getting all this attention?" And you can’t tell me other Black women singers are not fighting just as hard to be at the top like Beyonce. Yes, white women certain ones get attention on deserving. But the key word "Women meaning more than one White female" while the Black race has one female named Beyonce getting all the attention. Where are all the other Black women?

  37. As a follow-up to my earlier comment, I’d like to put in my two cents re: the question of who-what-where-when-and-why another black woman will come along to challenge the fair Beyonce. Beyonce became a household name because of her look and her sound. None of her music is very deep (a la Alicia Keys or India Arie) but she sounds damn good singing Bootylicious and Put a Ring on It. She’s passionate and beautiful and appeals on pretty much a global level. Rihanna is already an international superstar, and has potential to become a real powerhouse when she matures and comes into her own a bit more. So, as far as universal appea goes, she’s already beaten Beyonce. It’s just that the talent level is incomparable. Aaliyah probably could have done it, then again, some people didn’t even know who she was until the unfortunate accident (RIP). Alicia Keys has potential, but again, her vocal talent is squashed by Beyonce’s and her style is too soulful for the rest of the world. India Arie is too eclectic/Afrocentric to appeal to people on an international level. My money’s on a gorgeous (probably yellow, hate to say it), svelte, dancing and singing machine. Basically a clone of Beyonce. Yeah, we’re screwed man.

  38. Wow. I guess I should watch the performance now.

Just goes to show you–I just saw the clip; I had the Oscars on, but after nothing for Taraji or Viola, my mind officially signed off for the night (remember when TV used to sign off at Mid.?LOL) I knew about Bey, but I’m soooo tired of that girl I don’t know what to do. Yes Hollyweird—you do have other beautiful talented women–what does Papa Knowles have on these people?BEYONCE OVERLOAD, BEYONCE OVERLOAD, BEYONCE OVERLOAD!!!!!!!!!!**********But I have nothing else to offer that the rest of you haven’t already; as usual Snob, you’re right on point.

  40. @NAGROM "The Entertainer of our generation."…<system error>; <fail>; If I may quote another black female superstar – "hell to the naw!" I’m not mad at Beyonce from the standpoint of working hard and being a good capitalist, knowing all about synergy and branding herself, but "The Entertainer of our generation" is a bit strong for me. You can claim that for you, but please don’t include me in that program. As for your insinuation that we’re somehow being crabs in a barrel and race/gender traitorous for the Beyonce hateration on this thread, puh-leeze. This is equal opportunity hateration. It’s the same way that I hate on the Madonnas, JLos and Britney Spears of the world – under-talented, over-rated, over-exposed women who are too wildly ambitious to give a damn about what I think.

  41. I was just saying to someone that B. was very much overexposed. This is not a good thing. I feel a backlash coming soon. I work in the business and there are VERY talented sisters who are better singers, actress and dancers however they are not as famous. At some point her talent needs to catch up to her fame or it’s over.

  42. People who chalk up complaints about Beyonce as "hating" are missing the boat. It is just a natural reaction to a product that is being pushed too much. I’ve seen it happen time and time again. Beyonce’s blind ambition is her strength, but also her downfall. She wants to be all things to all people all the time, instead of working on a few areas and perfecting them. Everything is rushed and without any real reflection or connection. I don’t think it’s about one person taking her slot, but superior artists passing her by along with her own overexposure. For example, look at JLo when she faded. People were just done with her. Beyonce helped nudge her out in music, but definitely not film. Beyonce has not opened a "Maid In Manhattan" or "Out of Sight". Not even close. Yet, no one is packing the theater for JLo anymore? Why? People were just "through" with her. (I think she’s due for a comeback film soon though). To see who poses the greatest threat to Beyonce, all you have to do is look at who her fans hate the most. I can tell you right now the two people are: Jennifer Hudson and Rihanna. Kanye was right about Rihanna. Beyonce is trying to keep up with her. She has gone for a more ‘international" sound now and is doing "edgy" fashion layouts. Rihanna’s impact is there. Rihanna has killer style, sex appeal and most importantly, much sharper instincts. Rihanna fought hard for "Umbrella" and "Disturbia". Beyonce’s never had an ear for hit singles like that. But the key element she has over Beyonce is mystique. All the mystery is gone with Beyonce and it will never return (unless she goes away for a long, long time.) Then there’s Hudson who blows Beyonce’s voice clear out of the water. Hudson IS starting to be seen as the "voice of a generation". You could see it at the NAACP awards where both sang and Jennifer brought perspective: all of a sudden Beyonce’s voice seemed pedestrian and average. Jennifer seemed all the more gifted. Most legends have had drama of some sort that builds the mythology and connects them to the public and wouldn’t you know, both Hudson and Rihanna are seeing their share. Coincidence? (I should give Alicia Keys honorable mention, as I have a feeling she may end up with a more respectable acting career than Beyonce. Alicia is quietly studying her craft. She was better in "Secret Life of Bees" than Beyonce’s was in her debut films, I know that much. Keep on eye on Keys). Also I noticed it is not just the black blogs who are saying she’s overexposed now, this sentiment has spread to blogs across the board . So while I, too, am bored with Beyonce, I can see the winds shifting in the not so distant future. It’s natural and inevitable.

  43. Seriously, Madonna is a bigger star than her and you don’t see her plastering her face and body over ever single awards show, television broadcast, movie screen, stage, or anything with a spot light. Bee is the definition of over exposure. She’s been around since I was in high school. With the same musical style. It’s time for her to take a break. At least Madonna switches it up every now and then.

  44. @ DE-i cosign on everything you said.beyonce looked like a damn vase in that dress. HATED IT.

  45. Wow! Thank sooooo much I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I’ll give Beyonce her props and say that she is a good Entertainer but she too over-exposed. I had it with her when she showed up TWICE during the inauguration weekend. Someone please make go away and let the other talented sisters who TRAIN for years have a chance.

  49. "I like musicals, so I stopped what I was doing to watch, but when Beyonce appeared I realized that I will never be able to get away from this woman. Will it NEVER END?"Snob:You’re too funny. Its writing like this that makes me check my Twitter updates from your site while I’m supposed to be working. lol.Beyonce’s cool with me, but she is truly overexposed. However, I can’t hate on her cheddar game. She made $80 million last year and saved nearly all of it. She needs to give some of these fading B-listers (i.e. Christina Milian) some tips on staying relevant other than sleeping around for record tracks (with producers like The Dream).I didn’t see the awards, but I don’t know why half the people there were present. Like Jennifer Aniston. Girl can’t act to save her life. She looks great, but why exactly was she there again? They could have found a real actress (cough..Viola Davis..cough..KeKe Palmer..cough) who would have been a fresher face. This Brangelina/JennPitt crazinees has to stop.

  50. Like most I was very unimpressed with the Beyonce performance. Howevre to hold this against her and tell her to take a break is silly and unrealistic. First of all, did anyone consider this was a performance that was choreographed by someone less than ready to harness the talent that Beyonce has? Whether you want to admit it or not Beyonce is a force to be reckoned with. Why tear her down? She is probably in need of a break but in this industry a talent like that is in high demand. Beyonce will have to be brave enough to say "You know I’ve had enough’ I’m off the next # of months". So maybe she’ll read these hateful remarks and get the lesson. But I doubt it. If there is a message to give Beyonce it should be that we applaud her talent and popularity but she needs to take care of herself. With all the buffoonary that our people perpetrate on ourselves (ala BET, Flavor of Love, etc) I’d think some of you would realize your energy would be better spent telling those fools to go away. Oh and how about this? Maury Povich and the minstrel show that parades across his stage every day. We need a break from that crap!! Beyonce is the least of our worries. She’s young, beautiful and talented and deserves the attention.
