Richard Nixon: The Bigoted Gift That Keeps On Giving

More tapes of former President Richard Nixon saying some crazy racist things about blacks and Jews popped up in the news Tuesday. The complaints about “the Jews” weren’t new ones. Nixon’s vehemence for all lox and Moses-lovers is legendary. He wasn’t too wild about blacks either, but hey, since every tape sheds a new light on why Pat Buchanan is totally wrong about his former boss being some great American wonder president, on these we learn that he was for abortion in cases of “black and white” couplings and … rape.

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases — like interracial pregnancies, he said.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding, “Or a rape.” (New York Times)

It’s nice to know that interracial boots-knockin’ that produces brown babies is akin to a woman’s sexual assault. I mean, wow. Just wow. Under Nixon’s logic there would be no Barack Obama, no adorable Sasha and Malia and Michelle would be just another tall, successful lady we’d never heard of. There would also be no Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Tia and Tamara Mowry, Lenny Kravitz (black AND Jewish!) and several of my classmates, friends, neighbors and relatives would not exist.

That said, did this man tape EVERYTHING? I half expect to hear sound recordings of his poops being released in 2020.

    My question would be why in the heck did Nixon make these tapes? It’s almost like he wanted to destroy whatever legacy he might have had left after the Watergate thing.

    Just to throw out something pretty much random and almost OT about Nixon, did you know that he was responsible for ending the long-standing policy of forced assimilation and termination of treaty relationships with American Indian tribes, and initiating a policy of Self-Determination? Pretty shocking, but true! His impact on federal Indian policy was HUGELY important and very, very positive. I have no idea what motivated such a bigot to do such a thing; maybe he rejected assimilation because it might lead to the creation of "red and white" babies … but I dunno, a policy of self-determination seems so inherently respectful of the native nations.

    Snob, this also shows how ignorant he is of American history ’cause without black and whtie getting down a large number of black Americans wouldn’t be alive b/c the slave masters used to like to slip around to the slave cabins to get their jollies and to increase their slave populations so many of have distant white ancestors. Forget about just Obama and kids a lot of us wouldn’t be here. Either that or Nixon was being willfully ignorant. He was a twisted soul.

    Who cares? How are Nixon and his views relevant today? That was 1969–1974, basically 40 years ago.

    @ Scott: Nixon may be dead, but his views are not. There are people who still share his views and a good portion of them are part of the younger generations. I think they have been coming out of the woodwork since Obama was elected. "Post-racial" my shiny metal a$$.

    I should clarify there are people who share his negative views of race mingling and the effect abortion would have on a family. I’m not sure about the –abortion to prevent mixed babies– aspect, but it wouldn’t surprise me to know that the Archie Bunkers of the world are still alive and kicking.

    d:I know that some folks still share Nixon’s views but we aren’t talking about those folks. This was about Nixon’s personal views. He is dead and gone. We can sit around all day and name dead folks who were racists but what would be the point?

    Yor analysis is simplisitic and disingenuous. It doesn’t follow on from Nixon’s logic that Michelle Obama would be "just another tall, successful lady we’d never heard of" (as if being such a woman is a bad thing). Maybe, if life had run a different course, she might have a married another black man (non-mixed), have even more cute kids and, instead of her husband, actually be the one to become America’s first black president. Would that be a bad thing according to Black Snob’s logic?from a brown baby.

    What I can say is that no one in my generation gives a rat’s canoe about Nixon. I work at one of the Broadway roadhouses in America, and lets just say the turnout for Frost/Nixon pretty much was older people. If they are inclined to believe this view of his then maybe they are just trash.
