Beer and Crumpets At The White House (Gates-Gate)

So Scholar Henry Louis Gates and police Sergeant James Crowley finally met, face to face, over beer and other snack items at the White House with President Obama and, of course, Vice President “Mad Dog” Joe Biden. Excellent. Are we cured of our racial ills now? Does drinking Blue Moon with your orange peel in a White House monogram mug (My fav beer too, Crowley. Makes me wanna sing “Ebony & Ivory” with you.) make everything O-Tay?

Click to enlarge.Not really, but it’s a great photo! Everyone’s having beer and they look so happy! Well, not in this photo, but in other photos they were grinning. And Crowley and Gates have agreed to meet again. Perhaps they’ll put together a touring show where they’ll reenact it all for the yokels. You know? Kind of like how Jesse James’ assassin Robert Ford would tour the country killing Jesse James over and over, only this would be less violent and would involve more yelling.

Gates’ statement from The Root:

Sergeant Crowley and I, through an accident of time and place, have been cast together, inextricably, as characters – as metaphors, really – in a thousand narratives about race over which he and I have absolutely no control. Narratives about race are as old as the founding of this great Republic itself, but these new ones have unfolded precisely when Americans signaled to the world our country’s great progress by overcoming centuries of habit and fear, and electing an African American as President. It is incumbent upon Sergeant Crowley and me to utilize the great opportunity that fate has given us to foster greater sympathy among the American public for the daily perils of policing on the one hand, and for the genuine fears of racial profiling on the other hand.

Anyway. I doubt their reenactment could be anywhere near as good as Jon Stewart and Wyatt Cenac’s reenactment of the so-called “Beer Summit” from The Daily Show Thursday night.

    That white officer looks like one of those racist mofos that used to hose down civil rights acitvists. He wasn’t going to apologize or bend. The others coached him on taking a firm stand.

    I love disecting this picture. They’re thrying to have a joe the plumber moment. Biden and Obama are tyring their best to be regular guys – no jacket and sleeves rolled up in an ‘I can be like you’ way. They are clearly uncomfortable b/c they’re both clutching the arms of their chairs. Look at their fingers – not very relaxed. On the other end you have Gates and the cop in their Sunday best. Maybe not a stretch for Gates but I think I can still see the tag marks on the cop’s sleeve. Heck Gates and the cop seem more relaxed than Obama and Biden. Not sure of the cop’s usual color but I’m guessing the neck redness comes and goes, lol. This whole set up is pure comedy. As a taxpayer I’d like to be reimbursed for this little beer and crumpets tete-a-tete.
