Folks at Gawker Wonder When Republicans Will Speak Out Against the “Kill Obama” Fringe

The folks at Gawker haven’t been mum about their fears that all this fearmongering over the healthcare debate and other things is part of something far more dark and sinister that could lead to violence against President Obama. They’ve flat out said they’re afraid someone is going to attempt to kill the man. This fear was further stated in a recent editorial where Gawker’s John Cook chastized Republicans for not speaking up and against some of the coarser language being tossed about in the debate.

More after the jump.

From Gawker:

(E)ach publicized call for Obama’s death adds to the public perception that we’ve reached a decision-point about whether it’s time for killing. Every sign—even if the bearer is merely an angry loon who could never get close to Obama—is an inducement to someone who is willing to try. It’s a message to fellow travelers, a signal that they are not alone in their rage, a promise of glory to come if they actually manage to get the job done. As we said before, there are always people who want to kill the president. The question is how many give it a shot. And the more of these signs there are in the background of Fox News’ live report from some town hall in Missouri saying that someone should give it a shot, the more people actually will. And the more people that give it a shot, the more likely someone is to hit the jackpot …

So what is the GOP’s response so far to these threats? “Hey Democrats, They’re Called The American People.” “No Wonder Democrats Are Smearing Americans – They Read The Headlines.” “AS CANDIDATE, OBAMA ENCOURAGED ANGER AND AGGRESSION AMONG HIS SUPPORTERS.” Those are quotes from recent GOP press releases striking back at Democrats for calling a mob a mob. Where are the Republican politicians denouncing the violent rhetoric? Can we at least draw the boundary at threatening to kill his children?

If GOP politicians were to be outspoken in telling their supporters that strenuous political opposition is OK but that glorifying violence is not—how many signs have you seen reading “Sic Semper Tyrannis”?—it might go a long way toward tamping down the rage and decreasing the likelihood that someone actually becomes convinced that Sean Hannity will have him on the show as a reward for stopping Obama’s march toward a “culture of death.” But rage is all they’ve got, so rage it is. Not one GOP politician that we can find has distanced themselves from that rage. They’ve embraced it.

  1. Did the left ever speak out about the kill Bush fringe? Not that I ever recall. Let’s also remember that Rahm Emanuel once sent a pollster that offended him a dead fish and he is a Dem darling for his pugnacious attitude. Or how about Pelosi encouraging disruptive protesters back in 06. The common thread here seems to be that when Dems do it is people’s voices fighting the powers that be and when Repubs do it, it is racist hatred and fear mongeringSee Pelosi here:http://www.breitbart.tv/06-flashback-pelosi-tells-anti-war-protesters-im-a-fan-of-disruptors/

  3. @ ScottI don’t recall anyone from the left endorsing those actions either. What we are seeing now are people (who have been scared out of their minds) who want to kill the President and who in no uncertain terms are being egged on by various outlets of Right Wing media and Conservative Replublicans in office. We are seeing people who are white and are screaming that they want their country back because Obama has stolen it and he’s not American. We are seeing elected officials exciting this fear.Glenn Beck pretended to kill Nancy Pelosi on his show.Senator Grassley out and out told people that they should be afraid. This is not about a difference of political opinion. This is something far deeper and I think that Gawker is right to point that out.

  4. Erm… Republicans.

  5. is the same as asking al and jesse to speak out against the 4 black marines who killed their white CO and his black wife?

  6. "I don’t recall anyone from the left endorsing those actions either."have any republicans endorsed the "kill obama" guy?

I believe that some of our witless caucasian brothers ands sisters are terrified that recompense is coming due! They’re keenly aware of the atrocities that their ancestors visited upon so many minorities as well as other nations. I’d imaginethat this fact along with an appalling sense of entitlement i.e "I want my country back",makes them feel more than justifiedfor their actions. Beck, Limbaugh ,Hannity and their ilk all radiate fear and deep-seated hatred toward our commander-in-chief and the direction he wants to take the country. Many of these SORE-LOSER-BASTARD republican’s understand well that Obama’s "failure" is their gain and they are holding the party line and indeed want his administration to fall on it’s ass. Trust and believe, many, (not all) of these "fringe" fuckers are using the health care issue as their "white sheet" to hide behind! Hell, I though i knew what bullie’s and thugs were until i got a load of these hateful mother-effer’s. They’re onthe effin’ warpath! Obama ,Rahm, STICK TO YOUR GUNS.

  8. I don’t really recall democrats running out to Walmart to stockpile semi-automatic weapons. Or bringing concealed weapons to events where Bush was present (Oh and Ron Paul did defend the man’s decision to threaten our President). I can go on and on.

I really don’t think anyone is going to try and kill the President. What Redneck Bubba would want to go to a prison after shooting Obama? But there are obviously tons of crazy people out there – somebody voted for Palin.Speaking of crazy people, tara111 why don’t you channel that emotion into something positive instead of spewing ignorance like you were Palin. You make a blanket statement about all white people being aware of the "atrocities that their ancestors visited upon so many minorities". We are talking about Americans so pay attention to facts. Most white Americans have no ancestors that owned slaves, were Presidents that invaded other countries, etc. Remember that most white people in America today are descendant of people that immigrated to America after the civil war. The WASP’s that have run this country since day one have descendants left, but they total about 2% of our current population. Don’t be hatin’ – that goes for Bubba, Palin and Tara111.

  10. @Tarheelio: "I really don’t think anyone is going to try and kill the President. What Redneck Bubba would want to go to a prison after shooting Obama?"Ever heard of "death by cop"? They don’t intend to go to prison. THAT would take a set of balls most ring-wingers just don’t have.

Hey, tarheelio, you’re right,.I do get a little emotional when i see what’s brewing out there so you’ll haveto excuse me if i don’t take YOUR word for it! I’m sure Mr. Reagan didn’t see that bullet coming either! Or the Kennedy’s!You are the one who’s crazy if you think our prez doesn’t receive numerous death threats daily and given the chance, some loon would definitely take a crack at ti! Maybe you need to check your history and see how many successful assassinations have taken place in our country. I have to say, I really wasn’t trying to be racist or as you put it "ignorant"but given our history in this country( blacks), im not backtracking on what i said. Health care is an issue that needs to be addressed NOW and all the rightwing obstructionists can kiss my ass including Palin (wink, wink).

  12. @ TarheelioThe term ancestor in this sense isn’t used in a biological sense. Like the way people use the term "forefathers": meaning those who came before, to whom a history and common link is shared. I can’t speak on the percentage of yt people who were relationally connected to slaveowners, but I think it’s kind silly to state this fact as if owning slaves is the only atrocity committed by whites against blacks in this country. Even if your great-great grandfather didn’t lynch a negro and burn his farm for being black and prosperous, or if your great-great grandmother didn’t hold her baby up to see a nigger castrated and burned in the townsquare, they were very likely to have promoted and supported this evil culture by not resisting it. How many whites back in Jim Crow era we’re just dandy with having segregated, sub-human conditions for black people because that is what they thought negroes were: subhuman? How many whites thought MLK was a communist for wanting equal rights for all? Hell how many whites continued to put Strorm Thurmond (in this day and age!) back into his Senate seat. I may not agree with Tara111’s position that whites are coming from a place of guilt (their belief that blacks need to just "get over" 400 years of violence and disenfranchisement speaks volumes), but I call shenanigans on just about all of that bs you posted.

It’s about getting to the heart of all of the genuine and illegitimate fears that these protesters are talking (and screaming)about. The heart most likely being the undercurrent of racism involved. What do you think the"birthers" and "deathers" are all about? Why none these things are being roundly criticized by the GOP leadership. They stoke the fires with their tireless rhetoric and sit back and watch with mock outrage! and it’s not only the racism, but the abject greed that’s fueling a lot of this shit .A lot of our politicians are sooo bought and paid for by big pharma and the insurance companies. THAT’S WHAT IT HAS TO DO WITH THE TOPIC,swiv.

I miss being the only white person commenting on this blog. Swiv and the rest of you clowns commenting negatively on this excellent article, stop for a moment and think about what exactly you are defending? This crap has to stop and while you are here proclaiming a lack of racism, we get to listen to "magic negro" songs and less than subtle hints that our president should be shot. How about you shut your *&^%$ pie hole, head on over to Fox (or from wherever you spawned from), and take those idiots to task for their actions? That’s right, get off these boards and use your literary skills to point out the lies, the hate, and the fear mongering going on over there? You know, work to help the situation, and show that this is not a racial issue at all, it is a people issue… an American issue.Instead of doing all of that, you come to a blog that that isn’t white centric, and tell everyone its just our imaginations, that where were we when …, and pfft, we are a bunch of idiots. Way to fail you racist puke, no one, and I mean NO ONE is buying your story. I truly hope karma catches up with you.Peace.Rick BeaglePS Every time I open my mouth about how much we have grown racially, these clowns show up and remind me just how foolish my hopes are. sadness

  22. clearly your lack of logical thought would lead you to think i’m actually defending anything. unfortunately, you’re a simpleton who’s not intelligent enough to disect the real point that myself and other posters have attemped to intimate. we’re not defending this guy. we’re not saying what’ he’s saying is ok. what i’m saying is that expecting the republicans to defend this guy is about as effectuve, probable, or right as the democrats defending similar instances against previous administrations. let me know if i need to use smaller words so you can understand. quit trying to impress everyone with how open minded and how "post racial" you are, because your ploy is laughable and disingenuine. quiet as kept, people are allowed to have differing opinions. only intelligent people are capable of attacking a position in lieu of a person. unfortunately, those who aren’t able to come up with a adequate argument such as yourself are relegated to bumping your gums at a screen name instead of a screen name’s post. and by the way, because someone disagrees with your view point doesn’t make them a racist. just in case you needed to hear that. i like consistency, non bias, and logic tempered with facts. unfortunately people who react with emotion rarely retort with anything of the like. and i’ll continue to post here, because hey….i kind of feel like it. if you’d like to see less of my screen name or my posts, click on that "X" to your top right. oh yea, i’m not white. so you as a white person ateempting to use white guilt on me is not only misguided, but entirely laughable.

  23. @ swiv: "you’re spinning your wheels waiting for something that won’t come and is foolish to wait on. and it’s not because the president is black. or because they don’t like the president. there’s plenty of things said about the previous administration(s) that the dems didn’t criticize. or even the republicans."Were swastikas involved?

  24. i don’t know. were there? and does that change whether or not the >insert political party< should or shouldn’t say something?

  25. @swiv: Actually it does! And the fact that you feel such a deep seated need to defend obviously racist behavior with NOTHING more than snide comments makes one wonder what type of person YOU are.

  26. actually it doesn’t. wrong is wrong. some of the things said and done to bush/clinton/previous administrations are as bad if not worse, and no one was crying for an apology. i guess consistency is too much to ask. what am i defending? what have i said that defends racist behaviour? what have i said that condones this? is reading comprehension not your strong point? just because someone doesn’t fall in line with the monolithic, anyone who disagrees with me is racist, group think mindset doesn’t make someone a bigot.

  27. "i don’t know. were there"?-Swiv Wow, pathetic attempt to deflect.

  28. are you going to answer the question? trying to incite an emotional for one incident by taking the circumstances and actions of another is an attempt to articulate their point of those who aren’t able to articulte their points.

  29. @swiv: What Court said. And why is it that whenever anyone disagrees with what you have chosen to write, they are "ignorant" or they can’t read? Did you or did you not write: "it’s not because the president is black. or because they don’t like the president."?What the hell was THAT, if not a defense for your beloved Republican bigots? Do you really believe the Republicans LIKE the President? Are you that delusional? And don’t give us anymore of that "I’m just a Vulcan being Vulcan" crap! A straight answer would be refreshing.

  30. because you’re accusing me of something i never said. so either you’re magically deducing my nature from something that’s not their or you’re functionally illiterate. but i do like how you make a comment about my snide comments, and not rick beagle’s. like i said, consistency is too much to ask. there’s no mass public outcry from the republicans. for the very same reasons that there wasn’t a public outcry from the dems when incidents just as bad or worse happened to previous admins. where was the public outry during the shoe incident? or the rod blago debacle? or the sanford debacle? or the pelosi and emanuel incidents that scott mentioned? and those reasons don’t include because the president is black or the republicans don’t like him. if you’re going to want an outcry from one, you’re going to have to ask it from the other. WHENEVER IT HAPPENS. it won’t happen, it doesn’t happen. deal with it.

  31. As far as reading skills are concerned… My question to you: “Was a swastika involved?” The question was Obviously whether previous administrations had faced racially motivated criticism and outright hatred. The answer is known to all. The answer is NO! If you had wrote the truth, instead of clinging to sarcasm and insults, your own credibility as a superior intellect would not be in question now.

  32. my credibility on a message board doesn’t mean very much.i said i didn’t know. that’s an answer to a direct question. and i already said whether or not a swastika was present doesn’t matter because:"wrong is wrong. some of the things said and done to bush/clinton/previous administrations are as bad if not worse, and no one was crying for an apology."and "there’s no mass public outcry from the republicans. for the very same reasons that there wasn’t a public outcry from the dems when incidents just as bad or worse happened to previous admins. where was the public outry during the shoe incident? or the rod blago debacle? or the sanford debacle? or the pelosi and emanuel incidents that scott mentioned? and those reasons don’t include because the president is black or the republicans don’t like him. if you’re going to want an outcry from one, you’re going to have to ask it from the other. As a long time BlackSnob reader, I feel the need to point out that, as a white person, I’m a little offended about some of the comments in this post. I could not be more offended by the baseless attacks leveled against Obama in the past few weeks on Healthcare, and this assh*le with the "Death to Obama" sign deserves a very long sentence in a very small cell. However, I think it’s important to point out that Obama would not be in office if he was not deeply beloved by a majority of the American people. I lose sleep over nightmares of his assassination along with quite a few people, both black and white. I agree that most of the so-called "outrage" against Obama is race based. But I believe it would be foolish to dismiss all white Americans as racist because Barack won by a margin of around 60%, and only 12.8% of America identifies as black. So while I understand that these issues can bring up our bloody, shameful history as a nation, as a fellow minority (only 10% of Americans are GLBT) I think we need to take a collective step forward toward coalition building as open-minded, nonviolent and liberal people. We must band together or be defeated at the ballot box, separately.Peace and Hugs,HomoSuperior

Swiv, Hmm…. Amusing that you rant about how you aren’t defending these clowns, but you then defend these idiots through attacks on my intellect, my racial understanding, and my character. LOL! You are a racist tool here to try and drive a wedge between us through false indignation and talking points straight off a white power web site (oh yeah, I’ve been to a few – know thy enemy). It must to fill you with such rage to know that a white man is here linking arms with all who are willing against the likes of you. As one person noted, we won at the ballot box, and if we stand strong, we will continue to win. For the love of my wife, and my children consider me standing.I repeat what I said earlier, no one is buying your crap. Differing views are more than welcome here, but you don’t have a different view to share – all you have is hate and hateful rhetoric. So go away little man, and ponder a world where everyone is equal. Got census?Peace.Rick Beagle

  35. "just because someone doesn’t fall in line with the monolithic, anyone who disagrees with me is racist, group think mindset doesn’t make someone a bigot."- SwivAssuming that that’s all we are, a bunch of monolithic, emotional sheep who can’t use logic to come to fair conclusions, just because you disagree with us does NOT make you intrinsically right either. I’m not calling you a racist or a whatever. Matter fact I respect your right to disagree (even though not your desire to disrespect my opinions while doing so… booty chatter… really son?). But this idea of yours that a majority cannot reasonably agree on an issue through thought and understanding is silly. Furthermore, you keep trying identify comparable issues where democratic leadership were mum when they should have spoke up. There are none. We are talking about a man: a husband, a father, our President, a world leader’s life whose is at stake. After Bush stole the election, dems protested. We wore our Cheney is the devil tshirts and let our voices be heard. There were no swastikas, no concealed weapons, no youtube vids inciting violence or assinations, no liberals stockpiling semi-automatics. He sat in that office for eight years picking apart the Constitution piece by piece, sinking America further into debt with one senseless war after another and yet there still wasn’t a public reaction that you can fairly compare to the insanity that’s going on right now. I’m sure Bush got death threats all the time, but there was no public incitement. No guy at a townhall with a concealed gun and a nod and a wink to all his fellow fringe members. And no political leader coming out to defend this nutjob’s right to threaten our president (see: Ron Paul). There simply is no climate of hate, rage, and misinformation in recent time that you can compare this to. None. A foreign man throwing a shoe at Bush, is NOT a local movement desiring our president in a body bag. To compare them is trife.

  36. @ rick beagleyour initial was attacking, you mental midget. so thus you set the tone for my response. again, people are allowed to disagree, and are allowed to have their own opinion. that’s the beauty of a message board. just because you’re not smart enough to engage in intellectual discourse, doesn’t mean that others aren’t. someone point out where i’ve defended anything these people have said. if you can, then i’ll give you a gold star. good luck on finding it, because i never said it. you just want to insinuate it because there’s nothing concrete behind your assertationst. i haven’t said anything hateful on here, yet. i present a differing opinion, and one that some people can’t seem to handle. i’m alright with people who disagree with me. are you?@ courtyou believe you’re right, i believe i am. so? it happens. you disagree with me. yes, the majority CAN agree with thought. DOES it happen? when white people came to a conclusion and concensus that blacks were 3/5 human was that with thought? problem is with hot button issues, most people don’t agree with thought, and agree with emotion. people get on their soap box wthout knowing the facts. like obama and many others talking about the cambridge police without knowing the facts. they are comparable. just because one has a racial component does that make it more wrong than the others and thus requiring a backlash from the republicans? no. it doesn’t. bush didn’t have town hall meetings (which i think obama attending is stupid in itself.). so it’s a different time and climate and president. and? does that make it worse? no. it’s ALL bad. and if the reeps or dems didn’t say anything in previous incidents, why would they now? obama being black doesn’t make the threats any more or any less criminal.

  37. oh yeaLMAO @ linking arms in unity against hatred and swivLMAO!!!!i voted for obama, too.and my best friend is black.LMAO!!!!

  38. "DOES it happen?"Yes it does. Is it so hard to believe this is one of those occasions?"just because one has a racial component does that make it more wrong than the others and thus requiring a backlash from the republicans? no. it doesn’t."You’re right. The Klan CAN have meetings in the middle of Times Square if they so choose. The right to free speech however ceases when a person uses said speech to threaten bodily harm or incite violence. Which is the point of all this. The throwing of a shoe was not meant to encourage others to throw shoes (snicker). A member of your party telling other members KILL OUR PRESIDENT is a whole nother story. "bush didn’t have town hall meetings (which i think obama attending is stupid in itself.)."Why? Because he should shrink from the crazies that want him dead? I call not succumbing to intimidation courage. Obama knows he’s the face of the issue of universal health care at this time, and he’s taking it head on by being involved in the public discussion. Bush couldn’t give a damn what the nation thought about his policies. "and if the reeps or dems didn’t say anything in previous incidents, why would they now?"What previous incidents? Are you really clinging to the shoe thing?

  42. @ courti think it’s stupid for obama to be attending these not only from a safety standpoint, but to what end? he has an agenda for our country. we elected him because we thought he’s going to do a better job than the next guy. do it, then. quit listening and asking for our permission. quit trying to get a consensus. not everyone is going to be happy, and he’s just going to have to live with it. the dems have a filibuster proof congress. anything that the dems want can pass now. for him to be wasting time trying to convince people on how good this bill shows the fundamental problem with the democrats. not everyone has to be happy. just most people have to be happy. damn the conservatives. let them be pissed all the while this bill is passing. that’s why it’s a democracy. bush couldn’t give a damn about what people thought because he did what he thought was best. he might have been an idiot in office, but you couldn’t say he wasn’t a man of action. obama has twice the brain but half the balls. so in a year, we’ll still be vacillating over whether or not this bill is good for everyone. there are crazy people in every party, every gender, every racial group. he’s not crazy because he’s a republican, he’s crazy because he’s crazy. to insinuate that he’s crazy because he’s republicans is about as factual as to insinuate asians score high on standardized tests and are so smart because they’re asian. the thought process is a generalization, and a faulty and problematic one at that. unless….you know, republicans aren’t capable of agreeing with thought. which as a democrat, i’m inclined to think, but also know it’s a faulty thought process. "What previous incidents?"that and the others myself and scott have listed. you know, they’re not more or less wrong than other incidents. the fact that you’re downplaying shows your own personal bias. @ rick beaglewhy do you think i posted that, imbecile? i did that in mockery of you. you’re just not cognizant of the sarcasm laden in my post. nuance and chicanery aren’t your strong points, huh? i bet you just learned what those words i meant were, huh? what is your point? to scream and cry without anything to add to the discussion? you have three posts in here and none of them have added any insight than calling me racist with your faux-openmindedness. if you were really open about homosexuality, you would just accept those who are in lieu of trying to out those who aren’t. but i bet that last sentence had too much rational thought in it for you to handle.

@ Rick, swiv, everybodyLet’s keep the fights on the topics and not personal. OK? There’s no need to insult each others’ intelligence over disagreements.

  49. My point was the hypocrisy of the left when it calls out the right for not doing things the left won’t do themselves. And no, pointing out the left’s hypocrisy isn’t endorsing racism no matter what some would like to think.

There were no huge out cries to kill Bush. There was no rising tide of anger about doing harm to him. Why? Cause anyone with a lick of sense knew killing Bush would lead to something far worse. President Cheney.According to the Secret Service, there are 40 threats A DAY made against President Obama. Obama was assigned Secret Service protection earlier in the campaign process than any other presidential candidate in history. And the Southern Poverty Law Conference reports that membership in far right militia groups and supremicist groups is way up. This ain’t about healthcare. this is about fearful whites feeling threatened about their way of life. This is about the fear that chickens really do come home to roost. This is about how history repeats itself, in that, when progress is made to expand civil rights, the backlash to that progress is frequently violent. If you think that subliminal dog whistle doesn’t reach it’s intended listeners, ask about George Tiller. A lunatic heard the whistle and finally went and killed him. I’m old enough to remember Malcolm, Martin, Bobby and John. I don’t doubt for a second that the same thing can happen again. I just have to pray that the Secret Service has gotten much better at it’s job..
