Blacksnob.com Gets Shout-Out in Time Magazine!

You can’t see me, but I’m doing the Roger Rabbit in my chair right now! Blacksnob got a mention in Time Magazine in their latest story on Michelle Obama and her hair (and why her hair matters)! The author actually quotes some of my readers in her article. Way to go readers!

Some black women note that Michelle’s choice to wear her hair straightened affirms unfair expectations about what looks professional. On Blacksnob.com a reader empathized with Michelle’s playing it safe in the White House and outlined her own approach: “Whenever I start a new job I always wear my hair straight for the first three months until I get health care. Then gradually the curly-do comes out.” Another echoed the practice: “I wait about four to six months before I put the [mousse] in and wear it curly … I have to pace myself because it usually turns into a big to-do in the office.”

    Congratulations. I personally get irritated at all the hoopla over her hair. Non black folks obsessing about our hair?…why? LOL And to that end, they don’t realize that yes, many Black women need chemicals to straighten their hair – but then – many of us do not. I have never seen as much foolishness about one Black family, as I have with the Obama presidency. If they spent as much time on things that truly matter in this world instead of the First lady’s hair, body and clothes – we’d be in a better world. I don’t spend ANY time wondering about any other race and what they wear, how they wear their hair … so what makes us, as Black people so special?LOL I love your blog – keep up the positivity.

    "The amount of money black women spend on hair will be explored in Chris Rock’s upcoming comedic documentary Good Hair."I hope this documentary and other commentators explore how ALL groups of women, not just black women, spend outrageous amounts of money and time on their hair and other beauty products/services. From Jewish women to Asian women, natural hair (as well as skin tone, nose size and shape, etc) is being altered everyday and for significant cultural reasons that include age, race, and ethnicity and that need to be explored. We need to stop putting only African Americans under the microscope. As is typical of most famous black people, every aspect of Michelle Obama is being examined and this can’t be said of former white First Ladies.

    Congrats!!!City Girl the Chris Rock documentary is about black women not all women. There is another doc coming out on HBO that explores plastic surgery and the quest to stay young. I’m not sure if any women of color are featured in that doc. Just the economics of who buys the relaxers, weaves and lace front wigs vs. who makes the profit off said products is interesting. None of my white female friends spend the same amount of time or money on their hair that my black female friends do, not even close.

    You guys just don’t get it do you?That coon Chris Rock "mockumentary" is just another con job meant to take shots at AA women and make money off of it. Whites and to a certain extent other ethnic groups get off on downing AAs and Africans, and any media that will feed the appetite for such sick desires will make money.Hard to believe that there AAs are actually dumb enough to want to see, yet alone pay to see it.
